I’m trying to keep our house clutter free and I’m always trying to get rid of “stuff”, but I have a soft spot for things that were part of our childhood. So when my mother-in-law announced that she was going to bring a whole lot of old toys to the goodwill shop of the church, I jumped in my car and went to see what was there immediately.
I did show some restraint, I only brought a few things home. I think the blocks are always good to have around as basic toys (yes, I’m thinking of grandchildren – not now, but in a few years), it’s a beautiful set, very good quality.
And the books, no doubt there. Old fashioned fairy tales (I love fairy tales) and Dick Bruna. Again, good basics.
And that wooden bridge? Um… well… seeing the eyes of my slightly overworked husband light up when he showed me how it worked was reason enough to hold on to it.
Yes, five. I finished five hats in less than two weeks. I spend a lot of time knitting lately. I think that will pass, but for now it’s a good way to be productive when I feel to tired to tackle all those big chores on my to-do list.
So, there are more hats on the way, all for NestMaine. The top four are child-sized. Since I haven’t got any child-sized children anymore, I used my old doll to model them.
After (of course) some hats knit in Soulemama’s pattern and a simple stockinette hat, I made up my own pattern, using the textured stitch I liked so much on the shawl. I made both a child-sized and an adult-sized and I wrote down the pattern. If anyone is interested, just ask and I will post it.
My to-do list is miles long, including lots of boring stuff, like doing taxes. I also planned to take pictures of the hats I knit last week and write down the notes for the one I designed myself. But there is no way I can get it all done today, so I have to slow down, postpone the hat-post and show you some random pictures of our lovely weekend instead.
I was going to show you more of this, but I’m so busy, driving around town all day. So it’s just this picture. Hat #3 for Nest. More on that and the design later.
I think I’m not a real gardener. I just put things in the soil and watch them grow. Or die. That happens too. I think I just like to bond with nature, or something like that.
Most of my garden is doing well (like those strawberries), so I must do something right every once in a while.
But a real gardener? No. Today I bring you proof.
My two favorite things in my garden at this moment are:
:: the parsley flowers. I know I am supposed to cut those down, but I like them so much.
:: and the fact that my kale is starting to curl. Ha! I never new Kale started out straight. I thought the plants coming up were weeds, but I waited and hey presto. It is kale!
The chamomile I sowed? I have no idea where that went. It’s still not coming up. And the lettuce? Well, there is one leavy plant growing where I sowed the lettuce, but I’m not sure it’s the real thing. I’ll just wait and see what it turns out to be again. Worked for the kale.
So there you have it. Not a real gardener. But I am having fun.
So, here it is! The textured shawl, take two. I love it!
If you are like me, you may be wondering why I didn’t bind off after the last repeat of the fancy stitch. That should look more symmetric, wouldn’t it?
In fact, I did. But it kept curling up, even after washing and blocking. So I unpicked all 465 stitches and knit another 10 rows in garter stitch.
Now it’s really finished. And it seems I’m a shawl person after all. I spent an hour last night trying to take a good picture of me wearing it (so you can see how big it is – I’m 5′9″) and it felt so warm and cozy!
The forecasts were right. We had lots of rain this weekend. So there was lots of knitting.
Well, isn’t there always? When it’s sunny I say that’s the perfect reason to sit down and enjoy the sun with some knitting.
And when it’s rainy, I feel it’s the perfect reason to cozy up inside with some knitting. Still, I have nothing to show for all the time I spent with my needles.
I was planning on showing you my finished shawl and maybe even another finished project, but things didn’t work out as I thought they would. I had to find you another picture for today, so here’s for some raindrop-beauty:
